A NATIONAL cyber security, business and technology consultancy has been crowned top winner at the recent UK Cyber Security Awards.

Glasgow-based Waterstons, which also has offices in Durham, London and Sydney, Australia, picked up the ‘Best Cyber Security Company over 150 people’ award at the glittering ceremony on November 16.

The annual awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of business, individuals and charities within the cyber security industry, something that is especially important during a period of rising online risk.

Associate Director for Cyber at Waterstons, Stew Hogg said: “To be shortlisted amongst some of the biggest and best companies in the UK was an honour in itself, but to win was just fantastic.

“We work hard to make sure our clients are safe and secure online with everything from cyber strategy and accreditations, to training and proactive monitoring, so making sure we’re staying on top of the ever-evolving risks and putting measures in place to prevent security incidents is vital.

“Aligning ourselves with other industry experts such as Scotland IS and the Scottish Business Resilience Centre, as well as supporting the national cyber protect network through the Metropolitan Police means we’re able to be part of the wider cyber security conversation and support organisations to proactively strengthen their cyber posture.”

Waterstons’ Head of Cyber Consulting, Kieran Fowler, attributes the win to the array of opportunities for support offered by the business. He said: “Cyber crime is on the rise and we’re on a mission to reduce its impact on the economy.

“We now offer a 24/7 Security Operations Centre for all our clients to make sure they are protected around the clock, but also work with businesses on strategies, accreditations and even ethical hacking to truly understand the measures needed.”

Head of Cyber Assurance, Craig Archdeacon is the creator of one of the firm’s more innovative methods to teach the world about cyber security and business resilience, through the newly launched resilience board game, Udder Disaster.

Craig said: “It takes real business scenarios and applies them to the operation of a dairy farm, challenging players to solve the issues to make the business successful.

“The cyber threat landscape is very real and very serious, but it shouldn’t be feared. We created the game to help business leaders step out of their every day and consider risks out of the context of their own business.

“By having fun, it helps to remove the serious nature but still understand the challenges that can then be applied back to their own industry, team and business.”

Waterstons was founded in 1994 and offers a range of cyber security, business resilience and technology consulting services to firms across the UK and beyond. The firm recently won two Dynamo Awards for Best Use of Data, and the People’s Choice accolade.
