Plans for Tesco’s first store on the Isle of Skye have been submitted, with the proposed supermarket and petrol station in Portree expected to create 100 roles, excluding construction jobs.
Project Scotland reports that West Ranga Skye Limited and Lochalsh & Skye Housing Association have lodged a detailed planning application for the development. West Ranga Skye is a joint venture between West Ranga Property Group and Lujo Properties.
The proposal would bring a multimillion-pound investment to the area. It includes a 32,356 sq ft supermarket, petrol station, service yard and customer parking on a site of approximately 4.8 acres.
A dedicated grocery home-shopping facility would allow delivery vans to serve properties across Skye. Tesco currently serves the island through its online grocery business rather than a local store.
Alastair Dickie, director of West Ranga Skye, said, as reported by Project Scotland: “We are pleased to have been working with Highland Council through the pre-application process. We are now excited to submit a detailed planning application for the Tesco development and hope to bring a much-anticipated new store and petrol station to the Isle of Skye.”
The developer hopes to begin work in summer 2027, with an opening projected near the end of 2028 if planning permission is granted.

Matthew Price, acquisitions director at Tesco, said, as reported by Project Scotland: “We are excited about the potential to open the first Tesco store and petrol station in the Isle of Skye, as we currently only serve the local community through our online grocery home shopping business.”
Councillor John Finlayson welcomed the application, citing demand for greater shopping choice among residents and the pressures that visitor numbers can place on existing island retailers, according to the publication.
