A FAMILY-run roofing firm is celebrating after relocating to new premises and being admitted to two industry bodies in recognition of their high standards.

Old Plean Roofing, run by Mark and Fiona Thornton, recently moved into a unit at Stirling’s Springkerse Industrial Estate.

The team has also been accredited by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFCR) and the UK-wide Buy With Confidence scheme assessed by Trading Standards.

Gaining membership of the two influential organisations is the latest move by the Thorntons in their campaign to raise standards across the roofing industry and tackle the scourge of ‘rogue traders.’

They are delighted to be admitted to the trade bodies following stringent vetting procedures.

Fiona Thornton said: “When we launched our roofing business, we did so with the goal of improving industry standards and offering an honest, reliable and transparent service.”

“We hear so many heartbreaking stories about rogue roofers preying on unsuspecting people and we have even been involved in fixing the issues they’ve caused when they walk off site without completing work or fail to carry out a job properly.

“We’re always striving to do what we can to reassure clients and think it’s important that people know who they can trust – so applying to become members of the NFRC and the Buy With Confidence programme seemed a natural progression for us.”

“The application procedures for both were quite long and rigorous so we’re pleased to have made the grade and be recognised for the standard of our work and our excellent customer service.”

The NFRC – the UK’s largest roofing trade association – actively ensures all members offer high standards of workmanship and sound business practice via a strict code of practice and vetting procedures including site inspections.

The Buy With Confidence scheme – set up in response to concerns about ‘rogue traders’ – provides a register of businesses which have been thoroughly vetted and approved by Trading Standards.

Member businesses must undergo a set of tailored background checks, abide by a code of conduct and continue to be monitored to ensure they are trading in a fair, honest and legal manner with a customer-friendly service.

Mark Thornton commented: “It’s been a great start to the year so far with the move to our unit – which is a perfect base right in the heart of the Central belt – and achieving recognition from two important industry organisations.”

“We pride ourselves on our reputation and are thrilled to be granted the accreditations which demonstrate the first-class service we are determined to provide.”

“It’s all part of our ongoing journey as we expand the business, build up our credibility and do all we can to represent the roofing industry in a positive way. Our aim is to become the roofing builder and maintenance contractor of choice in Central Scotland.”

Mark and Fiona set up Old Plean Roofing in January 2019 after several years running Thornton Construction Consultants – a highly regarded consultancy providing technical advice on roofing to construction businesses.

They decided to use Mark’s 30+ years of industry experience to expand into the residential and commercial market covering Central Scotland.

Since then, the firm has seen strong and sustained growth and now employs a team of 13 and is continuing to recruit across the business.

The Old Plean Roofing team specialise in flat roofing and pitched roofs with services including repairs following water, wind or theft damage.

Last year the company was admitted to the prestigious Guild of Master Craftsmen in recognition of its exacting standards and expertise.
