One of Scotland’s most exciting and fastest growing industries came together to celebrate the best in the business at the Scottish Cyber Awards in Edinburgh earlier this week.

The hugely successful awards, hosted by the Scottish Business Resilience Centre, is in its second year and shines a light on innovative work and thinking across Scotland.

It focused on the positive aspects of what is a critical industry for Scotland’s future economic development, and with an increased number of high calibre entries submitted, the event was a sell-out success.

St Kentigern’s Academy, ZoneFox and ECS Security Limited were the highest achievers taking home two awards each.

The prestigious Outstanding Woman in Cyber was awarded to joint winners Alison Brogan, ECS Security Limited, and Nagmeh Moradpoor, Edinburgh Napier University for their dedication and commitment.

Other winners were Abertay Ethical Hacking Society for Cyber Resilient Community Impact Award, Droman Solutions was awarded Collaboration with Police Scotland, and ID Cyber Solutions won Best Cyber Start Up.

Chief Executive of the Scottish Business Resilience Centre, Mandy Haeburn-Little, said: “The evening was a huge success and everyone had a great time. It was brilliant to see the industry come together and celebrate some really inspiring work.

“There is truly amazing, ground-breaking work happening right here in Scotland and it ranges from small but brilliant innovations, to work in schools and universities and by crime-fighting authorities.

“These awards help recognise the importance of this rapidly growing sector to Scotland and give us an opportunity to celebrate the talent that we must do our best to keep hold of.

“It really does make a difference too. As an example, ZoneFox was able to use its awards success last year as a catalyst to go on and secure major funding which resulted in the creation of a large number of important jobs in the past 12 months.

“Congratulations to everyone who not only won an award but those who were nominated.

“They’ve all achieved so much during a challenging time and helped to create the foundations of our future economy.”

This awards had major backing, with lead sponsor PwC joined by key partners Zonefox and Symantec.

Colin Slater, Cyber Security Partner at PwC in Scotland said: “Another year of awards that demonstrates how cyber is prevalent across all walks of business and life. What was encouraging to see this year was the diversity of entries. This wasn’t just a set of technical awards – we also had entries from designers, marketeers, teachers and school pupils – showing that there is an increasing awareness about cyber security being an issue for everyone.

“To that end, it was also a pleasure to award teacher Toni Scullion and her team of pupils dubbed the Turing Testers as this year’s champion of champions.

“Not only are they fantastic role models for fellow teachers and pupils, but they have considerable energy and passion for what they do. For our industry to grow and evolve even more, it will take innovative people like Toni and the Testers not only to show the way, but to be involved, sharing their enthusiasm, so that others can see what is possible.”
