Scottish Enterprise has provided £5m in Environmental Aid funding to help INEOS O&P UK complete a more efficient furnace at its Grangemouth chemical production site. The agency says the project safeguards more than 100 manufacturing jobs.

The Furnace 10 project brings new technology into operation at the company’s olefins and polymers facility, which includes the UK’s only ethylene production plant. It is expected to improve productivity and reduce the site’s carbon emissions by up to 25,600 tonnes of CO2e annually.

Jan Robertson, managing director of energy transition and transformational programmes at Scottish Enterprise, said: “Our funding has helped INEOS O&P UK to complete an important project that brings more efficient technology into operation, improves productivity and reduces emissions, while safeguarding more than 100 Scottish manufacturing jobs.

“We’re working with companies, government and our partners to invest in Grangemouth. Through our work leading the Grangemouth Future Industries Board we are progressing a number of important projects to strengthen the cluster’s global competitiveness, promote and enhance its innovation capabilities and support its transition towards a more sustainable, low carbon future.”

Nick Williamson, chief executive of INEOS O&P UK, said: “We welcome the support from Scottish Enterprise. The Furnace 10 Project has delivered a significant strategic strengthening of the performance of the UK’s only ethylene manufacturing plant. Its advanced design brings Best Available Technology, supports lower energy intensity and reduced CO₂ emissions, while delivering the additional capacity needed to meet sales commitments.”

The Grangemouth operation manufactures raw materials used in sectors including healthcare, food packaging, construction and renewable energy. Its pipeline network links industrial centres in Runcorn, Teesside and Hull, supporting manufacturing supply chains across the north of England.

The £5m award builds on wider public and private support for chemical production at the site. In December 2025, the UK Government announced joint investment with INEOS of £150m.
