Revera Energy has closed project financing for its 400 MW / 800 MWh Hunterston battery energy storage system in North Ayrshire. Construction is due to start immediately, and commercial operations are expected in the third quarter of 2028.
The Carlyle-backed company has also issued a notice to proceed with construction. The move follows the final investment decision on the project, which Revera announced in June 2026.
The Hunterston site is about 50km south-west of Glasgow and north of the B6 boundary, which Revera describes as one of the UK’s most persistent power grid bottlenecks. The company says the project will contribute to grid resilience and help to unlock the transmission bottleneck separating wind generation in Scotland from electricity demand in England. It also presents the project as part of its support for the UK’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.
Santander, Barclays, Commonwealth Bank of Australia and NatWest are providing the non-recourse senior debt financing. Sungrow will supply the battery system and provide a long-term service agreement. OCU Group has been engaged as balance of plant contractor and operations and maintenance provider.
Danske Commodities and bp will provide trading and optimisation services. bp is providing a long-term tolling structure and Danske Commodities a long-term floor structure. Revera will oversee construction and long-term asset management.

Sam Lewis, senior project manager on the Hunterston project, said: “Achieving financial close and NTP on Hunterston BESS is a strong indication of our team’s ability to recognise quality projects, secure top-tier supply chain relationships and unlock financing in an impressively short period of time.”
Hunterston is Revera’s second transmission-connected battery project in the UK to reach financial close this year. Its 200 MW / 400 MWh Windyhill project is under construction and on track for commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2027.

Revera says it has up to a further 400 MW / 1,600 MWh of battery storage capacity with planning consent, land rights, grid access and 15-year capacity market contracts. Construction on this is proposed to begin over the coming months. The company says its UK battery portfolio will reach up to 1 GW / 2.8 GWh.
