JH&P strengthens Edinburgh office with appointment of Colin Orr

WEALTH manager James Hambro & Partners (JH&P) has recruited experienced investment manager Colin Orr to further strengthen its rapidly growing Scottish office.

Orr, a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment, has nearly 30 years of industry experience advising and managing investments for private and institutional clients.

Orr’s appointment reunites him with former 7IM colleagues Alex Montgomery, head of JH&P’s new Edinburgh office in Fountainbridge, and financial planning expert George Martineau.

Montgomery was joint CEO at respected Scottish wealth manager Tcam Asset Management, which managed over £1 billion of assets for clients before it as acquired by 7IM in 2018. Martineau was Head of Financial Planning there. Both are now partners at JH&P.

Montgomery, who launched JH&P’s office in Edinburgh in February this year, said: “Colin is another great senior hire for us. It’s rare to find someone with such a lot of institutional investment experience who enjoys working face to face with clients so much. For a company like ours, which is committed to offering a personal service and institutional standards of investment management, he will be a superb asset.”

Orr said: “I’m really excited to be joining JH&P, which has a fantastic reputation in the industry. What drew me was their approach to managing money. Investment managers work directly with clients, building close relationships. They construct the core of client portfolios with direct equities and they contribute in a collegiate and collaborative way to deciding which make the list. It’s not imposed on them by a centralised investment team.

“I also like the fact that JH&P is an independent partnership, so it has the ability to invest and to control its own destiny. It’s always focused on client needs and on doing the right thing over the long term; it doesn’t have to compromise those objectives to satisfy the shorter-term requirements of external shareholders”

After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, Orr worked as an investment manager at Tilney & Co before moving to London where he was a Director of Pan-European equity sales at Deutsche Bank. He then joined JP Morgan where he was a Managing Director in the equity research and sales division, responsible for some of the largest global institutional clients. After returning to Scotland in 2019, he joined 7IM where he looked after investment portfolios for onshore and offshore private clients, trusts, corporates and charities.

A further sign of the growing importance of JH&P’s Edinburgh arm is the appointment of Emily Palmer as a client services manager in November. She has a degree in International Relations from the University of Exeter, a Master’s in International Business Management and Finance from Heriot Watt University and holds the Investment Advice Diploma. She was at 7IM for three years and before that worked at Aegon. Montgomery said “Emily is an important addition to our Scottish team as we meet the increasing demands of a growing client list. She brings valued experience in client service and is excited about the opportunities for career development within JH&P”.
