Orkney has secured national recognition after two of its businesses were shortlisted at the prestigious British Business Awards, held last week at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
Neil Stevenson of Kirkjuvagr Limited — the company behind the multi-venue entertainment destination Garden Square in Kirkwall — was shortlisted for Entrepreneur of the Year. The category honours founders who demonstrate outstanding vision, leadership, and entrepreneurial flair. Garden Square, which opened in 2025, brings together bowling alley and arcade venue Lanes, street food and events space The Garden, and nightlife venue Rapture — a bold bet on Orkney’s appetite for world-class leisure.
Stevenson said: “Being shortlisted for Entrepreneur of the Year at the British Business Awards was a real honour, and I’m genuinely grateful for the recognition. It’s a category that celebrates vision and leadership, and to be considered alongside so many impressive businesses was brilliant. I didn’t take home the award on the night, but I’m proud of what the nomination says about the journey we’re on at Garden Square and what we’re building in Kirkwall.”
Joining him on the shortlist was Orbital Marine Power, the Orkney and Edinburgh-based tidal energy pioneer, recognised as a finalist for Green Business of the Year. The company is developing floating tidal stream technology that delivers clean, predictable energy from flowing water — a breakthrough with significant implications for the UK’s renewable energy transition.

This nomination recognises the leadership and hard work that goes into aligning ambitious environmental goals with strong business delivery, and it strengthens our determination to keep building clean, predictable energy from the power of the tide.”

That two Orkney businesses earned a place among the UK’s top companies on that stage is a testament to the depth of entrepreneurial talent thriving beyond Scotland’s central belt.
