LandAid’s biggest ever SleepOut and first in Glasgow raises over £10,000 for youth homelessness charities across Scotland

  • Every penny raised will go to Scotland based charities, to support young people between 16-25 years experiencing homelessness in the area.

ON Thursday 2 March 40 property professionals braved the cold overnight at Buchanan Galleries to raise over £10,000.

All funds raised through the Glasgow SleepOut will be directed towards projects that provide accommodation, employment opportunities and wider peer to peer support for young people currently experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness, who have nowhere else to turn.

This is the first time there has been a LandAid SleepOut in Scotland.

The Glasgow SleepOut is one of 7 locations across the UK that hosted a LandAid SleepOut, as well as the option to get involved virtually, all taking place on the same night. These included Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Leeds, London, and Manchester.

In total, Thursday 2 March saw nearly 1,300 property professionals from across the UK come together to raise over £500,000 to support young people experiencing homelessness. Each region has been raising funds that will support a project local to them.

The LandAid SleepOut has been supported by headline sponsor Knight Frank, alongside regional sponsor Hollis in Glasgow, while Landsec kindly lent the venue at Buchanan Galleries.

The event also received cardboard boxes from Crown Workspace for everyone to sleep on, and Hunter Ops kindly provided the signage required for each venue.

LandAid would like to congratulate those who completed a very challenging night and to give a huge thank you to all those who have helped make this event such a success!

Paul Morrish, LandAid’s Chief Executive, said: “A huge thank you to everyone who braved the freezing cold and slept out during the biggest LandAid SleepOut ever and our first Scottish SleepOut. It’s amazing to see the event grow year on year. We hope this will be the first of many.

While the experience gives everyone a very good idea of how tough sleeping outside is, one night outside does not replicate the true reality of rough sleeping that faces thousands of young people all over the UK. With the efforts of hundreds from the property industry, we have raised enough funds to make a real difference by providing safe and secure places for young people who can now focus on building a brighter future, rather than worrying about their night-to-night sleeping spot.”

Craig Munro, Hollis’ Regional Head, said: “Hollis are delighted to be a sponsor of LandAid’s first ever Scotland SleepOut. Having supported the event in England for many years we know the impact it has in bringing the property industry together to raise money to help end youth homelessness – a vital cause that we must all do our bit to tackle.”

Kathy Murdoch, Centre Manager at Buchanan Galleries said: “We’re extremely proud to have supported LandAid by providing them with the space to host its first Scottish SleepOut.
It was so heartwarming to see so many people in Glasgow descend on our car park, brave the cold and sleep out for one night to raise vital funds and awareness for this great initiative – and we’re grateful to have been able to contribute where we could for this fantastic cause.”
