Luxury Beauty Giant Returns to Scotland, Signalling Confidence in UK Market Resilience and Targeting Aggressive National Growth.

Sephora, the global beauty retail powerhouse owned by luxury conglomerate LVMH, is set to significantly bolster its UK presence this summer with the opening of two new flagship stores in Scotland. This move marks the brand’s inaugural physical retail footprint in Scotland, extending its immersive beauty experience to Edinburgh and Glasgow and underscoring its rapid national growth strategy.

The new Edinburgh store, spanning 4,961 square feet, will be located within the St James Quarter, a prominent £1 billion mixed-use development in the city centre. Concurrently, Glasgow’s Silverburn Shopping Centre will host a larger 5,048 square foot outlet.

This expansion into Scotland is a crucial phase in Sephora’s re-established presence in the UK, following an earlier, less successful foray. The retailer initially exited the British market in May 2005, having opened only six stores over five years, citing challenges such as high rents and intense competition. Sephora orchestrated its strategic return to the UK in 2021 by acquiring online beauty retailer FeelUnique for approximately £132 million (or $147 million USD). This was followed by the launch of its dedicated e-commerce platform, Sephora.co.uk, in October 2022, which superseded FeelUnique.com. The brand’s first physical UK store opened its doors in London’s Westfield London in March 2023. Since then, Sephora has embarked on an aggressive expansion programme, with locations now including Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, Liverpool, Cardiff, Oxford, and a recent opening in Belfast, which marked its 13th store and first in Northern Ireland. The company has brought forward its target to operate 20 stores nationwide by the end of 2026 by a year, owing to robust performance.

The UK beauty market continues to demonstrate substantial and dynamic growth. Valued at approximately USD 14.99 billion in 2024, it is projected to reach USD 23.75 billion by 2032, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.03%. The broader UK beauty and personal care sector contributed a record £30.4 billion to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024. This growth significantly outpaced the wider economy, expanding four times faster with a 5% inflation-adjusted increase compared to the general economy’s 1.1% rise. The industry supports nearly 700,000 jobs, with beauty services alone accounting for £5.9 billion of the GDP contribution. Despite this strong performance, a slowdown in overall household spending on personal care products and services is anticipated for 2025, with job and export growth also expected to decelerate. The market is characterised by discerning consumers, with trends heavily influenced by social media, K-pop culture, and an increasing demand for innovative, exclusive, natural, and eco-friendly brands. In response, retailers are increasingly investing in experiential store concepts and personalised services to enhance customer engagement.

Both selected Scottish locations are prominent and high-performing retail destinations. St James Quarter in Edinburgh, which saw its first phase open in June 2021, represents a £1 billion transformation of a 1970s shopping complex into a modern “lifestyle district.” The development, now 75% owned by APG and 25% by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), attracted over 19 million visitors in the 12 months leading to March 2024 and is slated for rebranding under the Westfield banner in 2026. Silverburn Shopping Centre in Glasgow, an out-of-town complex that commenced operations in October 2007 with over 100 stores, has garnered significant regional appeal. It was recognised as the “UK’s best shopping centre” in 2019 and “Retail Destination of the Year for 2025.” Acquired by Henderson Park and Eurofund Group in 2022 for £140 million, Silverburn achieved a record footfall of 15.2 million visitors in 2024. Property giant Landsec is currently in discussions to acquire the centre for over £200 million.

The new Sephora stores are set to offer an extensive range, including Sephora UK exclusives and a carefully curated selection of popular brands, many of which will be available in Scotland for the first time. This lineup includes Hailey Bieber’s rhode, Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs, Makeup by Mario, Merit Beauty, INNBeauty Project, Tower 28, and the recently added Half Magic. Shoppers will also benefit from Sephora UK’s innovative Beauty Scan technology, designed to provide personalised consultations and product recommendations through advanced skin analysis.

Commenting on the highly anticipated launch, Sarah Boyd, Managing Director of Sephora UK, expressed enthusiasm: “The Sephora UK team and I are thrilled to finally reveal that we’re bringing our ‘temples of beauty’ to not one, but two incredible Scottish cities this summer – with fans crying out for a Scottish beauty playground.”

Anne Ledgerwood, Estate Director at St James Quarter, highlighted the significance for Edinburgh: “The opening of Sephora’s first store in Scotland is a major moment for both St James Quarter and Edinburgh’s shopping scene. As one of the most influential names in global beauty, its arrival brings a new retail experience to the city and an exciting addition to St James Quarter’s growing beauty line-up.”

Similarly, David Pierotti, General Manager of Silverburn, underscored the positive impact on Glasgow: “Sephora coming to Glasgow marks such a big moment for the city and the west of Scotland and we are so pleased to be home to its largest store in the country.”

The brand is already building excitement with promotional hoardings at both sites playfully displaying Sephora’s signature black and white stripes alongside the slogan “Twice the stripes, twice as bonnie!”.

Sephora, a key subsidiary within the luxury conglomerate LVMH, continues to be a strong performer for its parent company. For the full year 2024, LVMH’s Selective Retailing business group, which encompasses Sephora, reported organic revenue growth of 6%. Sephora delivered a “remarkable performance” with double-digit growth in both revenue and profit, primarily driven by global expansion and new store openings. This robust growth has significantly bolstered Sephora’s market share across North America, Europe, and the Middle East, even amidst an “unfavourable” broader luxury sector. This dual launch in Scotland further solidifies Sephora’s commitment to expanding its physical retail footprint across the UK, capitalising on strong consumer demand and the allure of prime retail destinations.
