Edinburgh Airport plans to invest more than £500 million over the next five years in an expansion that will increase its terminal footprint by 60%. The programme includes new gates and aircraft stands, a larger check-in hall and departure lounge, and improvements to arrivals and baggage facilities.
The South East Pier expansion, the first phase of development, is due to open fully in summer 2027. First Minister John Swinney visited the site with airport chief executive Gordon Dewar as the plans were unveiled.
The airport says the investment will support additional long-haul and short-haul routes, strengthening connections with markets in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia. New aircraft stands will allow it to handle more aircraft movements, while the terminal works are intended to improve passenger flow.
Retail, food and drink areas will also be expanded and improved. The plans include new international arrivals facilities and areas for baggage handling and reclaim.
Chief Executive, Gordon Dewar said: “This is the biggest investment in Edinburgh Airport’s history and comes at one of the most exciting points in its development, adding another important chapter to its story.
“Our growth has cemented our position as Scotland’s busiest and best connected airport, and we know the important role we play in supporting economic growth in Scotland and the UK. This investment will strengthen our international competitiveness by growing Scotland’s connectivity.”
The five-year programme forms the first phase of a wider investment plan for the airport and its campus. Its owners, VINCI Airports and GIP, said the spending would increase capacity and improve the passenger experience.

Work will extend beyond the terminal, with a new access road and additional electric vehicle infrastructure included in the first phase. The airport says the programme also provides opportunities for further low-carbon improvements under its Greater Good sustainability strategy.
