Clyde 1 scoop historic back-to-back radio awards in its 50th year

04/05/2023

GLASGOW and the West’s very own, Clyde 1, has won a historic gold for the second year in a row at the national radio awards – the ARIAs.

On a night to remember the station won The John Myers Station of the Year award, the first time any station has won it back-to-back in 30 years.

The only other station to win this prestigious award (in the same equivalent category) since the awards started back in 1983 (previously known as the Sony’s), unbelievably was sister station Clyde 2 in 1993 and 1994. Relaunched last month as Greatest Hits Radio and home to the likes of fellow award winners Ewen & Cat At Breakfast and radio legend Ken Bruce, with PopMaster of course!

In what is an already historic year for the station, as it turns 50 years old on Hogmanay, the team celebrated the incredible achievement at the ARIAs award night in London.

The ARIAs are the Oscars for UK radio and audio, recognising the individuals and teams who excel at their craft and produce the very best body of work in the world.

Alongside being named station of the year, The Big Saturday Football Show, on sister station Forth 1 and the rest of the Hits Radio Network (except Clyde 1), won a bronze award for best local show and a silver award for best sport shows.

Across the entire Bauer radio network, the group won no less than ten awards including 4 golds.

Victoria Easton-Riley, Content Director for Scotland, said: “Winning station of the year for two years running is a truly historic achievement and a huge credit to the staff on and off-air across Clyde 1 for the incredible work they have put in over the last 12 months and beyond. The passion, dedication and enthusiasm they demonstrate every single day to keep getting better, makes it an incredible place to work.

“It makes it even more special with this landmark award coming in Clyde 1’s 50th birthday year.

“Couple this win, with the fact Forth 1 and the Hits Radio Network, won two awards shows the depth of talent and quality we have across Scotland in our stations.”

George Bowie of Bowie @ Breakfast said: “I have been on Clyde 1 for over 25 years now and I truly believe this current line-up of presenters and shows is the best we have ever had.

“The Clyde 1 team work immensely hard to ensure we give our listeners the best news, music, travel and entertainment every day and make sure we all have a laugh doing it!

And I can honestly say that likes of Cassi, Griegsy, Grant, Garry, Gordon and the Superscoreboard team, Callum, Amber and myself, have never loved coming to work at Clyde 1 more than we do right now.”
