LEADING North-east waste management and recycling company, EIS Waste Services Ltd, has secured a £300,000 contract with Port of Aberdeen – Britain’s oldest existing business.

The three-year contract will involve EIS providing comprehensive waste management and recycling services across Port of Aberdeen’s estate, from visiting vessels to office facilities. The port aims to become the UK’s first net zero port by 2040 and the new contract will support the reduction of its scope 3 emissions.

EIS, in alignment with its commitment to reach zero emissions and carbon-free collections, has revolutionised its waste management practices. Port of Aberdeen will benefit from its waste being sent to EIS’ purpose-built transfer station facility at Checkbar on the outskirts of Aberdeen. This system of recycling and energy production allows a 100% diversion from landfill solution.

Neil Sharp, Managing Director at EIS Waste Services, said: “This partnership with Port of Aberdeen marks a significant milestone for us, emphasising our commitment to a sustainable future. Through the delivery of our comprehensive waste management and recycling services, we aim to support Port of Aberdeen in its journey towards net zero.

“Under a thorough competitive tender process, we’re delighted that a local firm like ourselves has won this contract with such a prestigious local business.

“We believe our commitment to environmental responsibility and cutting-edge technologies aligns with Port of Aberdeen’s vision, and in collaboration, we are working towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

Belle Sierina, Environmental Manager at Port of Aberdeen, said: “Effective waste management and recycling is an important strand of our net zero strategy. We look forward to working with EIS Waste Services Ltd and identifying opportunities to enhance our environmental and sustainability activities.”

EIS, which has a staff of 108, has recently taken on two additional drivers to meet the demands of the contract. The firm has a strong focus on sustainability. Its headquarters, located at Checkbar, on the outskirts of Aberdeen near Cove, is fully powered by renewable energy.

EIS recently invested £2.5 million in state-of-the-art vehicles to ensure full compliance with the new Low Emission Zone (LEZ) requirements for Aberdeen city centre. Its fleet of vehicles, which are the most advanced of its kind with low emissions, has been awarded a five-star rating in the UK ECO Stars fleet recognition scheme since 2018.

The delivery of all containers to the Port of Aberdeen site was facilitated by a fully electric Volvo skip truck which EIS is currently trialling as part of its carbon reduction plans. It is the first of its kind in Aberdeen.

EIS Waste is an independent waste management provider specialising in bespoke waste collection and recycling services. It holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 accreditations. The family-run business works with clients across energy, commercial, education, healthcare, retail, leisure and construction sectors. The firm also provides domestic skip hire.
