Nasdaq-listed semiconductor company Cirrus Logic has received a research and development grant from Scottish Enterprise to fund a new smart-energy metering platform developed out of its Edinburgh operations. The project runs through 2028 and is aimed at high-accuracy energy measurement for residential, commercial and industrial applications, EV charging, data-centre DC metrology, energy storage and grid monitoring.

The funding supports development of a new metrology analogue front-end platform and expands advanced engineering activity at the company’s Edinburgh site. Cirrus Logic has held a long-standing engineering presence in the city, and the grant is presented as the latest step in the company’s investment in Scotland’s semiconductor talent pipeline.

The commercial significance for Scotland is twofold. It anchors more R&D headcount for a large listed technology company in Edinburgh at a time when foreign-headquartered semiconductor firms are consolidating their European engineering footprints. And it puts Scottish engineering directly into two rapidly growing global segments — grid metering and data-centre power measurement — where demand is being driven by electrification, renewables integration and AI-cluster build-out.

The grant value has not been publicly disclosed. Scottish Enterprise said the funding aligns with its focus on targeted investment in innovation and internationalisation to help transform the Scottish economy.
