BURNS & MCDONNELL, a leading engineering firm, has been awarded an engineer-procure-construct (EPC) contract for the Errochty Grid Supply Point (GSP) project by SSEN Transmission. The project marks a significant step in upgrading Scotland’s transmission infrastructure to meet the Scottish Government’s target of over 20 GW of additional renewable electricity on and offshore by 2030.

The Errochty substation development involves the installation of new transformers and the modernization of transmission and distribution capabilities. These upgrades are crucial to accommodating the increased capacity at the Tummel Bridge Hydro Power Station.

Burns & McDonnell’s role in the Errochty GSP project aligns with SSEN Transmission’s efforts to enhance the country’s transmission infrastructure. The goal is to support Scotland’s transition to net zero by expanding its renewable energy capacity. The project falls under the RIIO T2 EPC Substation AIS (Air Insulated Switchgear) Framework.

In addition to the Engineering and Construction teams, Burns & McDonnell’s Environmental Services (ENS) Group will contribute to the project. The ENS Group will provide insights into the environmental and social impacts of the project, ensuring sustainable solutions and fostering ongoing community engagement.

This project marks a milestone for Burns & McDonnell, solidifying its position in the UK energy market. The firm, with over 125 years of experience in the United States, opened its first European office in Birmingham in 2017. Since then, the U.K. team has tripled in size, with the addition of a Scottish office in Glasgow in June 2022. Burns & McDonnell has been actively expanding its portfolio in the country, including mission-critical projects.

Jonathan Chapman, U.K. Managing Director at Burns & McDonnell, expressed pride in securing the Errochty substation project. He highlighted the excitement of being part of SSEN Transmission’s essential work to update Scotland’s network and prepare for the net-zero transition. Chapman emphasised the company’s eagerness to commence the Errochty project, citing it as a testament to Burns & McDonnell’s impactful contributions in the U.K.
