Nearly six years after the closure of the Michelin Tyre Factory in Dundee, Wilkie has announced a transformative new chapter for the Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc (MSIP). Wilkie will join forces with current shareholder Scottish Enterprise, becoming the majority shareholder of MSIP, relocating its manufacturing operations from Kirriemuir and Forfar to Dundee. This move ensures the site’s continued growth as a hub of innovation and economic development.
This ambitious project is expected to deliver a workforce increase of up to 600 jobs and bring an estimated £50 million investment in advanced infrastructure, technology, and development.
Wilkie’s Commitment to Growth and Sustainability
Wilkie’s decision to relocate to Dundee marks a pivotal moment in its strategic growth. The move away from its historic Kirriemuir site was not made lightly but reflects the company’s commitment to modernising operations and ensuring its future sustainability.
The new site offers a purpose-built, modern layout capable of housing advanced technologies and supporting Wilkie’s ambitious expansion plans. Dundee’s larger workforce will also enable the company to scale operations more effectively.
Aligned with its sustainability goals, Wilkie aims to leverage MSIP’s renewable energy resources, including wind turbines and the MVV Waste to Energy plant, to significantly reduce its carbon footprint while continuing its transition to sustainable products, processes, and materials.
Commitment to Kirriemuir and Employees
Acknowledging the impact of this transition on the Kirriemuir community, Wilkie has pledged to collaborate with local councils and residents to leave the site in a safe and positive condition. The company will also engage employees in a comprehensive consultation process to support their needs during the transition. The expansion in Dundee will create new roles, providing opportunities for workforce growth and skill development.
A New Era of Innovation and Economic Growth
This development represents a significant milestone for Dundee, Wilkie, and MSIP, solidifying Dundee’s reputation as a centre for advanced manufacturing and sustainable technology. The collaboration between Wilkie, Scottish Enterprise, and other stakeholders marks a transformative step forward, fostering economic, environmental, and social progress in the region.
Hamish Rowan, CEO of Wilkie, said:
“The world-class infrastructure at MSIP provides a strong foundation for Wilkie to honour its proud legacy while embarking on an exciting new chapter of innovation and growth. This move marks the beginning of a new era, creating a home for Wilkie for the next 150 years and empowering the team to realise Wilkie’s ambitious and sustainable growth plans.”
Greig Coull, CEO of MSIP, added:
“I am delighted that Wilkie has brought its large-scale manufacturing ambition to the site, as the majority shareholder in this next chapter of MSIP. Their leadership and commitment to innovation and sustainability will continue our mission to drive decarbonisation and advanced manufacturing.”
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes commented:
“This announcement furthers our ambition to make manufacturing a significant part of the activities at MSIP. Wilkie’s involvement will create and protect jobs while adding fresh impetus to the Parc’s future development.”
Adrian Gillespie, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise, said:
“Wilkie is a great Scottish success story with a strong track record of investment in innovation. The company’s plans to create hundreds of new jobs at MSIP are great news for both the regional and national economy.”
