Barclays has began work on a new state-of-the-art campus in Buchanan Wharf in Glasgow. Once completed, the campus will be able to accommodate up to 2,500 additional people, doubling Barclays’ current workforce in Scotland and making the bank one of Glasgow’s biggest commercial employers.
The new facility will house the bank’s functions, technology and operations teams, delivering outstanding services to customers and clients.
Jes Staley, Group Chief Executive, Barclays said: “Glasgow will be home to one of our global strategic campuses alongside Whippany, New Jersey, and Pune, India. This site will play a critical role in developing and deploying the technology which customers and clients rely on and which is the foundation for our future success. Glasgow city has all the attributes to be a leading UK and European technology centre and we look forward to being part of it.
Scott Stewart, site lead for Scotland, was joined for the ceremony by one of Barclays’ longest serving employees in Scotland, Martin Basset and representatives from the Scotland Diversity and Inclusion Award winners Nico Hampton, Scarlett Perkins and Christina Kogka.
Scott said: “It’s another big day for the new campus and for Barclays in Scotland. The effort and amount of planning to get us to this stage has been extraordinary and I’d like thank Glasgow City Council, Scottish Enterprise and Drum Property Group Ltd for all of their support in helping us get here ahead of schedule. To be able to celebrate this moment with colleagues from across the city has made it even more special. It’s colleagues like the ones here today that make Barclays in Scotland such a great place to work, so it’s only right that they are the ones to start the next phase of development”.
